Estrutura Insuperável by Daniel de Paula

Voor haar tweede tentoonstelling binnen Kunsthal Gent nodigt KUNSTHALLE São Paulo de Paulo de Braziliaanse kunstenaar Daniel de Paula uit. Zijn werk en onderzoek reflecteert op de totstandkoming van ruimte in ons dagelijks leven, als de reproductie en bevestiging van de dynamiek van macht en dominantie, om zo kritische bedenkingen te onthullen over de politieke, sociale, economische en historische structuren die plekken en relaties vormen en besturen.

Door middel van een verscheidenheid aan strategieën, zoals uitgebreide onderhandelingen binnen organisaties, maar ook de toe-eigening, verplaatsing en re-contextualisering van reeds bestaande narratieve objecten en beelden, refereren zijn installaties, sculpturen, acties en video's aan de onderliggende besturingssystemen van de wereld en benadrukken ze de ondeelbaarheid tussen materialen en de contexten waaruit ze ontstaan.

Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling in KUNSTHALLE São Paulo toont de kunstenaar een opeenstapeling van werken binnen een conceptueel framework, getiteld ‘estrutura insuperável’, zonder gebruik te maken van individuele titels, data, of direct waarneembare en afgebakende grenzen tussen de uiteenlopende sculpturale manifestaties. High-frequency antennes, een lopende band, geotechnische boorkernen, fragmenten van marmer, een maansteen, ballastwater en beelden van vlaminspecties bij olie- en gasraffinaderijen bevolken de tentoonstellingsruimte, in symbiose met de toeschouwers en de architecturale kenmerken van de ruimte. De opstelling is een poging om vermoedelijk los van elkaar staande objecten met elkaar in verband te brengen, en de complexe sociale krachten die verborgen liggen in de materialiteit te benadrukken.

Over de kunstenaar

Daniel de Paula (Boston, 1987) is een Braziliaanse kunstenaar die momenteel werkzaam is aan de Jan van Eyck Academie en zich beweegt tussen Maastricht, Nederland en São Paulo, Brazilië.

Kunsthal Gent herbergt een speciale gast: KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, geïnitieerd in 2012 door de Braziliaanse curator Marina Coelho. In 2017 beëindigde KUNSTHALLE São Paulo haar activiteiten in São Paulo om een reeks internationale projecten te starten. Onder het dak van Kunsthal Gent presenteert Marina Coelho een reeks projecten en tentoonstellingen van (inter)nationale kunstenaars. Kunsthalle São Paulo kenmerkt zich door het experiment en het creëren van discussies rond actuele sociale en hedendaagse vraagstukken in de kunst. Kunstenaars worden uitgenodigd om site-specifieke projecten te ontwikkelen, meestal in reactie op de lokale context.
