Eye On Lebanon

Eye on Palestine addresses not only Palestine, but all those who endure oppression and face Western colonial violence. Palestine is the heart of all struggles, ever since the Nakba in 1948, and the people continue to suffer under the same forces that have brought nothing but death and destruction to their lands. Eye on Lebanon highlights the collective memory and identity of two Lebanese makers and highlights their stories within a broader context.

We start the evening with a screening of Mea Culpa by Patrick Tass. Lies and guilt are at the core of Patrick’s relationship with his mother Randa. Over the years, he collected their audio messages and video calls. He now transforms them into a portrait of her life in Lebanon and his in Belgium. By turns moving, provocative and hilarious, Mea Culpa questions the links between national and sexual identities for a young Palestinian emigrant.

After the screening, together we have a collective listening of Maabar, an on-going podcast series tracing the modern history of Lebanon through the stories of those who have it. Cutting across two genres — Oral History and Documentary — the cascade of stories paints a people-centered, multi-perspective view of what took place and the meanings they carry. For this we are joined by Anthony Tawil for a talk, the producer and co-creator of Maabar.

The evening ends with an improvised musical intervention by Tedzi, reacting to the stories of the evening.

Patrick Tass

Patrick Tass is a Belgian director of Palestinian origin, born in Beirut in 1992. He lives in Brussels, working in the world of cinema. He is currently directing two short films and co-writing a feature-film. In his works, Patrick focuses on themes such as identities and sexualities.

Anthony Tawil

Anthony Tawil is a Lebanese musician, creative director, and producer based in Beirut. His work explores the relationship between past and present by using memory and space to re-question identity and evoke a new understanding of history. He is the producer and co-creator of “Maabar,” an ongoing podcast docu-series that examines the Lebanese modern history through individual memories and personal testimonies, aiming to present a multi-perspective narrative of the conflicted past.

Tedzi

Tedzi, a musician from Beirut now based in Berlin, He crafts harsh beats and tense tonalities, channeling sound as a form of resistance against the weight of persistent injustice, systemic oppression, relentless trauma, and intrusive disruptions.
