OFFoff x Lochness:
Skatepark Screening

Lochness, een collectief en artist run space uit Gent, bouwde het Oud Huis van Kunsthal om tot een modulair skatepark dat ze de afgelopen drie maanden gebruikten als platform voor een interdisciplinair programma. Tijdens de finissage vertoont OFFoff samen met Lochness een skatefilmprogramma in het skatepark.

Vanaf de jaren ’60 ontwikkelde de skatescene haar eigen, iconische beeldcultuur. In de jaren ’90 werden betaalbare videocamera’s een vaste reisgenoot op skatetrips doorheen de States. Parkings, verlaten industrieterreinen en leeggepompte zwembaden werden het decor voor talrijke films, vergezeld van stevige gitaren en schreeuwerig gezang. Lang voordat YouTube of Instagram het leven zagen, circuleerden de videotapes van vroege skate-sterren van huiskamer tot huiskamer. Ook vandaag maken film en video integraal deel uit van de scene. De legendarische Sony VX1000 DV-camera draait nog steeds dolle uren op obscure plaatsen en tijdstippen, trouw vergezeld door het immer jonge skatetalent dat zich wenst te vereeuwigen op het web.

Deze avond richt zich niet zozeer op de ‘klassieke skatefilm’ – ondertussen een genre op zich – maar op films op de rand van experimentele cinema en skatefilm.

Daags nadien opent in De Warande in Turnhout de tentoonstelling ‘NBD – een kijk in de Kempense skatecultuur‘ en zal ook de nieuwe filminstallatie Reel Real Double Time van kunstenaar en filmmaker Ans Mertens te zien zijn t.e.m. zondag 23 juli.

Claude Jutra - The Devil's Toy
Deze korte documentaire uit 1966 is opgedragen "aan alle slachtoffers van intolerantie" en toont het begin van skateboarden in Montreal. Het skateboarden, toen een nieuwe activiteit die door politie en volwassenen werd afgekeurd, gaf jongeren een opwindende sensatie van snelheid en vrijheid. Deze film - de eerste Canadese documentaire die ooit over deze sport is gemaakt - legt de uitbundigheid vast van jongens en meisjes die de tijd van hun leven hebben in hun vrijlopende bewegingen bergafwaarts.

Sarah Vanagt - Little Figures
Drie standbeelden op de Kunstberg in Brussel: een koning, een koningin en een middeleeuwse ridder. Drie nieuwkomers in Brussel: een Filippijnse jongen, een Rwandees vluchtelingenmeisje en een Marokkaanse jongen. Drie standbeelden, drie kinderen; een denkbeeldig gesprek.

Abel Kleinblatt - SIDEWALKS (a series on form and function)
Een visueel essay over het gebruik van de openbare ruimte.

Miguel Faro - Downhill
Een reis naar de andere kant van de spiegel, naar Lissabon - skaten en de bijbehorende cultuur brengen een technologie van kijken met zich mee die beweging, lichaam, gezichtspunt en ruimte op een specifieke manier coördineert. De stad wordt getekend door het plezier van de lichamen die er doorheen bewegen.

Arthur Le Duc - Let's Go
Als skater en filmmaker documenteert Arthur Le Duc (aka Feeelsgood) zijn vrienden tijdens hun skatemissies in de stad. Voor deze vertoning dook hij in zijn archief en gebruikte hij beelden van Ans Mertens om deze gloednieuwe skatefilm te monteren.
