We are looking for 5 female participants for the art project ‘Movement and Sound Archive’ by Grace Schwindt, spring 2022.
Who is it for? Individuals interested in sharing their experiences of defending and creating safe spaces, in order to develop together an archive of movements and sounds. No previous training is required.
Please contact danielle@kunsthal.gent if you would like to get involved and feel free to share this call with anyone you feel could be interested. This call is also available in Dutch, French and Arabic.
OPEN CALL
My name is Grace Schwindt and I am an artist (b. 1979 in Germany) living in London and Amsterdam. I am working with performance, film, music and sculpture.
I am looking for people to be part of my project ‘Movement and Sound Archive’, which will be realised in collaboration with Kunsthal Gent through the format of workshops and an art exhibition in the spring of 2022.
With this project I want to question hierarchies within Western society where many — on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation or religious beliefs — experience some form of violence on a regular basis and a few claim entitlement to positions of power and resources. I want to dismantle the idea of ‘tolerance’, where some claim to be in a position to tolerate from a distance and from above and others are assumed to be in need to be tolerated. Instead, I want to propose and insist on the necessity for direct touch between individuals, a touch that invites closeness without the need to explain oneself and to allow being affected by each other.
I plan to work with a group of five female individuals who are interested in sharing experiences of defending and creating safe spaces. Instead of using words, we will use movements and sounds to share experiences (for example, humming a remembered melody or share a movement from a significant memory). We will create a ‘library’ of those movements and sounds from which we will then develop a music piece and a simple movement choreography that will be part of my exhibition alongside sculptures at Kunsthal Gent. No previous training is required.
Proposed schedule:
- March 2022 – online conversations with Grace Schwindt, to introduce each other discuss each others’ needs and interests.
- In the week of 18 — 22 April 2022 – five-day workshop to create the library of movements and sounds
- In the week of 23 — 27 May 2022 – five-day production / rehearsal period to create and rehearse a musical composition and a movement choreography.
- 27 May 2022 – one evening performance on the opening night of the exhibition at Kunsthal Gent (a recording of the performance will remain part of the exhibition after the live event).
- Food and drinks will be provided and you will be paid a volunteer fee of €36 per day.
You can find more information about my previous projects on my website: www.graceschwindt.com. Please contact danielle@kunsthal.gent if you would like to get involved and feel free to share this call with anyone you feel could be interested. We very much look forward to hearing from you!
