OLD Fashioned: kilos of potatoes with negative words written on them in different languages

By writing ANGER, HATE, CRIME, VIOLENCE, RACISM, WAR on kilos of potatoes, strongly suggesting the need for these words to be PEELED OFF, WASHED, CLEANED, CUT, COOKED, thereby articulating these terms as Old Fashioned and in need for replacement. I, metaphorically undertake this task by peeling, cooking and eating the potatoes that in the process leave behind a transformed landscape devoid of any of the markers of the above.

Over the duration of the performance, the installation/Landscape keeps changing with peeled skin all over the space, cleaned and cooked potatoes served in plates, boiling water, cooking pans, moist, smoke and smell of the food.

I invite people to join the action, sometimes the audience get inspired and spontaneously join the performance.

PEELED OFF, CLEANED, WASHED, BOILED, CUT, COOKED!

These daily acts (Rituals) are needed to destroy those Old Ideas!

Monali Meher

Since 1998 Meher’s art practice involves various disciplines. The most significant one is ‘Performance Art’. Decay, hybridization & transformation: Creating new identity; reshaping belongings; intimacy; a dialogue of matter and memory constitute the language of her work. “Time” as a factor, whether it’s a wrapped object or a performance. The aspects of continuity, repetition, vulnerability, temporality, site-specificity and public involvement are also inherent qualities. Monali Meher recieved her BFA at J.J. school of Arts, Mumbai India and studied at Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam.
