Shif — t*: Breadwinner

Breadwinner is a staged event by current Kunsthal Gent resident Shif — t*. It masquerades as a solicitation model to expose the imbalance between supply and demand in the art field. Framed like an open call or job vacancy, it invites participation while revealing the performative rituals artists are expected to adopt in order to survive.

By exaggerating these transactions, the event shows how value is often extracted from artists through visibility and promise rather than fairly exchanged. During the exhibition, the work is produced live: submitted CVs and motivation letters are compiled and presented, while conversations with artists and cultural workers address questions of work, labour, and precarity in the cultural field.

From this tension emerges a call to action led by a collective of artists moving toward working as a platform. Rather than reproducing scarcity and competition, Shif — t* proposes a shared structure rooted in what people already carry together. Breadwinner does not end at exposure; it marks a shift toward building an alternative held in common.

Shif—t*

Shif — t* is a queer, transdisciplinary collective of artists based in Ghent, shaped by a shared desire to understand how creative practice can become a form of holding. We work from the belief that environments are not fixed architectures but temporary agreements of care, shaped by the people who gather within them. Our practice unfolds at the intersection of craft, performance, social design, and communal learning. We prototype spaces that do not simply host encounters but gently reorganise how those encounters can take place. We treat scenography not as backdrop but as a relational tool, and we treat knowledge not as property but as something that grows between bodies.

Friday Evenings

During Friday Evenings, we present a programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation for 9 – 10 weeks. We offer local partners a platform. And we highlight artists with whom Kunsthal Gent is currently collaborating. Every Friday night is different: from performance, artist talk and book presentation to conversation, dinner or film screening.
