On Thursday night, 5 December, Ghent’s museums are organising the iconic Museum Night. That evening, Kunsthal Gent is dedicated to Eye On Palestine. In our cinema, we are introduced to the cultural riches of the SWANA (South-West Asia and North Africa) region. Captivating stories are brought to life with evocative visual art, experimental film, live music and performances.’

While continuing the tradition of Ghent’s museums opening their doors on the first Thursday night of December, this event at Kunsthal Gent is also part of the program of Eye On Palestine: a month-long event at various venues in Ghent, aiming to illuminate Palestinian culture, history and the impact of the occupation through agaze that goes beyond mainstream media portrayals.

This evening is organized in collaboration with Splinter vzw, Ghent-based collective we’ve worked with over the past year, most notably during the hosting of Palestina Cafe at Kunsthal Gent in June this year. Splinter is dedicated to fostering inclusive, grassroots artistic and cultural practices that amplify marginalized voices, with a strong focus on diversity, social justice, and artistic expression. Their activities span a variety of formats, including events, workshops, and festivals that highlight underrepresented voices, particularly from the Global South.

Marah Haj Hussein — Olive Tree

‘Olive Tree’ by Marah Haj Hussein is a composition that started its way in Palestine in 2023. Starting from improvisation, it slowly arrived at its first structure where the body met the sound in Language: no broblem- a theater performance created by Marah in 2024. With oud, double bass, guitar and a loop station, movement will accompany the sound supported by a flow of words. The text being projected and the gestures being spatialized, olive tree will carry its sounds through the space, creating room for the olive season sensation to be embodied.

Toni Geitani

The performance by Toni Geitani, a project in development, brings to life a speculative narrative in which Antarah ibn Shaddad, the celebrated Arab poet and warrior of the pre-Islamic era (‘Asr al-Jahiliyyah, 525 – 608 CE), encounters an unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) during a moment of solitude on the battlefield. The music, performed using synthesizers, Arabic scales, and vocals — both raw and processed — explores the intersection of traditional and contemporary forms. It reflects on the timeless essence of oral poetry and its connection to sound and rhythm.

The performance incorporates visuals that depict the landscape of the battlefield, the figure of Antarah, and the arrival of the UAP. A projected text narrates the story, anchoring the audience in its unfolding progression.

Eye On Palestine

Eye On Palestine is a platform of cultural players and civil society organisations from Ghent, who want to visualise the Palestinian issue through art in various disciplines with room for reflection during debates and lectures.

Eye on Palestine aims to introduce the public to Palestinian and international directors, artists, writers, musicians, scientists and activists. Together they provide a unique view of the lives of Palestinians and their resistance to occupation, colonialism, Zionism and apartheid.

Splinter

Splinter is dedicated to bridging the gap between artists and the spaces they need to bring their visions to life. From the spark of creative inception to the final showcase, they support and empower artistic endeavors across all disciplines and mediums. Leveraging their extensive network within the cultural sector, they foster collaboration through semi-autonomous workgroups that thrive on innovation and inclusivity.

Firas El Hallak

Firas El Hallak is an audiovisual artist and curator who divides his time between Belgium and Beirut. He serves as the Artistic Director at Splinter vzw. His diverse artistic practice spans film, installation, and new media art. El Hallak’s audiovisual productions have been featured in numerous theaters, galleries, and festivals across various performance art scenes. His extensive body of work includes films, comics, documentaries, TV commercials, installation art, and music videos.

El Hallak holds an MA in Visual and Scenic Arts from the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik and a postgraduate degree in Digital Storytelling from the KASK School of Arts in Ghent. In addition to his artistic practice, he teaches Sound Theory at the Lebanese University.

El Hallak frequently collaborates with other artists and writers and is a member of several art collectives in both Beirut and Europe. He is deeply committed to researching and exploring how artists can create and shape culture in an increasingly screen-centric world.

El Hallak’s work has been exhibited in various venues worldwide, including the Prague Quadrennial 2019 “Our Theatre of the World,” Guestroom Maribor, the Canadian Pavilion Expo 67, and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions in his hometown of Beirut.

Toni Geitani

Toni Geitani, born in Beirut in 1992 and now based in Amsterdam, navigates an expansive artistic landscape as a filmmaker, sound designer, music producer, singer, and composer.

After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking, his debut and graduation film, “The Leaves Will Bury,” offered a poetic narrative that envisioned the final hours lived by its main protagonist in Lebanon before a pivotal event, adding layers of tension and atmosphere.

In 2017, the Ashkal Alwan “Video Works” grant acted as a catalyst for Toni’s film, “The Disappearance of Goya.” This compelling work blends elements of historical trauma and post-war experiences with intricate dimensions of remembrance. The film has received high praise at prestigious film festivals, such as the 29th FidMarseille and the 21st RIDM.

Marah

Marah (b.1998) is a dancer, actress and maker from Kofor Yassif in occupied Palestine. She is currently based in Antwerp, where she graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Dance at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. In June 2023, she completed her master’s degree in Drama at KASK in Ghent. By merging these two disciplines, Marah challenges the delineation that separates text from movement, while simultaneously searching for possible ways to allow both into the performative space.

In her work, Marah investigates the concept and definition of mother tongue while exploring the power dynamics between languages. In 2023, she won the Roel Verniers Prize by Het Theaterfestival for her solo performance Language: no broblem.
