KINSHIP AND PARTICIPATION
As part of the city festival Openbare Werken,* Angelique Campens (art historian and teacher at KASK Ghent) organises a new edition of “Think Tank Art in Public Space”, exploring the role of art in public space. The session brings forward Katrien Laenen, who spent 17 years with the Vlaamse Bouwmeester (Flemish Government Architect) and 8 years with Kunst in Opdracht (Art on Commission) at the Department of Culture. Drawing on her extensive experience, Laenen will reflect on the evolving role of art in public spaces.
The session will also emphasize the growing importance of civic engagement and participatory art. Contributions from Ivo Provoost and Simona Denicolai, an artist collective that has worked with Laenen, Mark Pozlep, an artist involved in the city festival Openbare Werken, and Danielle van Zuijlen, curator and coordinator of Kunsthal Gent and co-organiser of Openbare Werken festival, will explore the challenges, opportunities, and artistic value of creating public art.
Building on the themes of previous Think Tank sessions, curated and moderated by Angelique Campens, the discussion brings together students, artists, architects, and theorists to examine how art can enrich the social and spatial dynamics of urban environments, encouraging thoughtful engagement with public spaces.
*Openbare Werken is a city festival organized by Tot in de Stad!, a network focusing on art in relation to the city, by de Koer, Kunsthal Gent, Jong Gewei, CAMPUSatelier, manoeuvre, VIERNULVIER, KASK and LUCA School of Arts. It will take place from May 9 –18, 2024, in the public spaces of Ghent and its surroundings.
