Syllabus Reading Group #20: Saja Amro

From the end of January until May 2024, Disarming Design from Palestine (DDFD) is in residence at Kunsthal Gent. It’s an independent non-profit design label promoting thought-provoking and disarming designs from Palestine. In 2024, they will organise regular events at Kunsthal Gent, from symposiums and lectures to pop-up shops. On the occasion of International Women’s Day and the situation in Gaza, Kunsthal Gent and DDFD invite you to the 20th edition of the Syllabus Reading Group. The evening will be preceded by a meeting with human rights activist Khalil Shaheen.

Gathering For Palestina: Sulaiman Saleh & Khalil Shaheen

Before starting the Syllabus Reading Group, we gather for a conversation between Sulaiman Saleh and human rights activist Khalil Shaheen. We will focus on the challenges that Palestinian women are facing in previous and current situations. Khalil Shaheen is a Palestinian refugee in Ghent who spent his whole life as a human rights defender with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Gaza, defending hope for a better life for more than 2 million Palestinians.

Syllabus Reading Group: Saja Amro & Sharing Palestinian food

Host of the 20th edition of the Syllabus Reading Group is Saja Amro, Palestinian architect and designer. We will read “The Arming Act,” an essay on the power of education by Saja Amro, published in Durable Discussions, essays from the Disarming Design Department (Onomatopee, Amsterdam, 2022).

Sulaiman Saleh

Sulaiman Saleh is a communicator and researcher with a focus on international and intercultural communication. He was a lecturer at Jonkoping University (Sweden), teaching students in Media and Communication, and Global studies. Born in Gaza, studied in Malaysia, worked in Sweden, and currently based in Belgium, he is an active member of Cinema Maximiliaan and works as a coordinator for Disarming Design.

Saja Amro

Saja Amro is an architect, educator, and designer based between The Netherlands and Palestine. Her work investigates the influence of spatial design on social dynamics in education. In her practice, she disrupts traditional classroom structures, aiming to rebuild them on the principles of radical pedagogy. As a tutor at the Architecture Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Saja uses the classroom as a place to collaborate with her students and reimagine spaces inspired by popular education methodologies, and roots of Indigenous cultures.

Syllabus Reading Group

Every month we organise a Syllabus Reading Group. Together, we read texts by Silvia Federici and other feminist authors. Every month there is a new host (our guest in the Syllabus Reading Residency for several days) who presents a specific book or text. The Syllabus Reading Group stems from the work‘Syllabus’ by Irish artist Jesse Jones: a monumental curtain with the arm of Silvia Federici that creates space for (engaged) gatherings.
