Syllabus Reading Group #22: Midnight Marsh — Annie Proulx ‘Fen, Bog, and Swamp’

The Midnight Marsh team invite you to join them in reading extracts from Annie Proulx’s Fen, Bog, and Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and its Role in the Climate Crisis.

As we prepare for our first nighttime walks through the marshes of Gent, we look to marshlands in other regions via Proulx’s investigations into the histories, folklores and science of these rare, unique and incredibly important environments.

Travelling from the fens of 16th Century England, to America’s Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, this book is both a revelatory history and an urgent plea for wetland reclamation, from one of our greatest living writers.

The Syllabus Reading Group is organised in Kunsthal Gent, in the context of the work ‘Syllabus’ by Irish artist Jesse Jones: a monumental curtain with the arm of Silvia Federici that creates space for (engaged) gatherings. Since its start during covid, we’ve read texts by Silvia Federici and other (feminist) authors. Each edition, there is a new host who presents a specific book or text.

Midnight Marsh

MalaikaCunningham is a practice-based researcher and performance maker. She makes magic realist interactive artworks which explore the possibilities of performance, storytelling, food, and installation in creating
democratic spaces. She has a PhD in participatory performance and democratic theory and recently completed a 3 year residency with Artsadmin.

Zoë Laureen Palmer is a multidisciplinary artist and human ecologist who creates playful, spaces for multispecies encounters, rest and collective care. Her work in opera has toured across the UK and internationally.

Jennie Moran is a Dublin-based visual artist who uses the philosophy, culture, and infrastructure of hospitality to create opportunities for shared connection. She also runs a nomadic hospitality response unit called
Luncheonette.

Keir Vine is a composer and sound artist who works across a variety of mediums using improvisation, sonic healing and immersive story-telling. He has performed for over a decade with the group Portico Quartet
touring worldwide in concert halls and clubs alike.
