5Y Kunsthal Gent: Party Weekend

Kunsthal Gent is 5 years old! We are celebrating this with an extensive, free party weekend from Friday 3 May to Sunday 5 May. The programme will be made by artists and collectives who have helped shape Kunsthal Gent in recent years. Brace yourself for a party, performances, concerts, artists’ cake, a children’s programme around analogue film, XL confetti cannons, … and we will make a film!

Friday 3 May (19:00 - 23:00) — Concert • Performance

We start the weekend with concerts and performances programmed by Social Harmony, Nein and Mundi.

Social Harmony was founded by Dieter Durinck, who exhibited his ‘Bootleg Paintings’ at Kunsthal Gent in 2023. It is a Ghent non-gallery and non-music label where music meets visual art. They invite the band Rimov Rimov to kick off our party weekend. Expect leftfield, hip-hop, avant-folk, guitar music and DIY synths.

Nein, an organisation by curator/artist Laurens Mariën, has already regularly passed by Kunsthal Gent with projects that focus on and challenge artists in a search for alternative exhibition contexts. For the occasion, Nein invites Antwerp collective Borokov Borokov for a raw and energetic live show.

Artist collective Mundi creates a fantasy world for both the artist and the spectator to immerse themselves in. Mundi will roll into nothing less than The Mundimobile. What exactly that means we will discover on the spot.

Friday 3 May (23:00 - 05:00) — Party!

After the concerts and performances, we will close the opening night and jump into the night for a party in our cinema, which will be transformed into a steamy club for the occasion. Djs on the programme: Sara Dziri, Unos and Bebe Books dj’s. Brace yourself for energetic sets full of house, hyper-pop, breaks and eclectic dance!

Saturday 4 May (11:00 - 18:00) — “The Endless Walkthrough”

Film recording of a participative choreography parcours:

On Saturday 4 May, we will make a short performance film together with you, inspired by a dance film Jan Vromman made in the monastery in 1989, together with Alain Platel and his dancers and with an audience from the neighbourhood (see the Argos archive). Because: art is made together!

This film portrays the community around Kunsthal Gent, our audience and the achievements of 5 years of Kunsthal Gent. In dialogue with filmmaker/performer Shivadas De Schrijver, Argentinean choreographer Jimena Perez Salerno develops a choreography trajectory through the Endless Exhibition, inviting you to become part of this short film. Sunday 5 May: Coffee & artists' cake • film programme & workshop for children

On Sunday we go for conviviality. We start the day with coffee and artist’s cake by Celebr8 Cultcakes. And our exhibitions can also be visited. And those who want can take a guided tour of Kunsthal Gent, focusing on the building and its history as well as how Kunsthal Gent uses and activates the building. You can register for the tour via this link.

Art Cinema OFFoff puts together a family-friendly film programme for children. Children can sign up for a workshop that introduces them to the wonderful world of analogue film. They scratch, paint, glue or perforate their stories in motion on real strips of celluloid. The tactile nature of celluloid opens up a different perspective on the digital videos children are familiar with. Closing does OFFoff with a projection of their self-made 16mm films in the cinema for all participants, family, friends and other curious people!
