“The Endless Walkthrough”: film recording of a participative choreography parcours

From 3 to 5 May, we celebrate Kunsthal Gent’s fifth anniversary. On Saturday, May 4, we will make a film together with artists, partners and audience. Because art is made together! So we are inviting everyone who has been involved with Kunsthal Gent over the past few years, or who has a soft spot for us as audience. Under the inspiring guidance of Argentinean choreographer Jimena Perez Salerno and filmmaker/performer Shivadas De Schrijver, we will make a short film together. During opening hours, so visitors can join in as well.

Film recording of a participative choreography parcours

We take our inspiration from a dance film Jan Vromman made in the monastery in 1989, together with Ghent choregrapher Alain Platel and his dancers, and with a local audience: GHENT, 10 JUNE 1989, FOR GERALDINE NEREA (see the Argos archives). In a single shot, this film followed a choreography by Alain Platel through the hall church, which was still a ruin at the time. A young Johan Gimonprez is taking part as a dancer, along with his baby, Geraldine Nerea, after whom the film was named. In the five-minute film, with only the natural sound of the recording, the audience slowly takes over from the dancers.

35 years after Vromman and Platel’s film, the hall church, renovated in the 1990s, looks completely different. And after five years of Kunsthal Gent, 15 works of art are now part of the Endless Exhibition. Jimena Perez Salerno and Shivadas de Schrijver have developed a participative choreography parcours through the Endless Exhibition, which is also recorded in a one-shot and with real-time audio.

We invite you to become part of this choreography and the final short film, that we are making to portray the community around Kunsthal, our audience and the realisations of 5 years of Kunsthal Ghent. No experience needed, register via the link!
