Firas El Hallak: Artist Talk

Audiovisual artist and curator Firas El Hallak transforms the Kunsthal Gent pavilion into an oasis of deep tranquility and shared attention with The Dome Sessions. During this Friday evening, he will provide insight into his work and process during an open conversation with art historian Sara Mondini.

Inkom: Pay What You Can

This gathering offers a chance to step deeper into the work, its origins in the unfinished Dome in Tripoli, its transformation into a space of listening and collaboration, and the questions of memory, architecture, and sound that run through it. After experiencing the installation, this talk creates room to reflect together: how does the space feel, what does it evoke, and what stories does it carry?

Firas will speak about the process behind The Dome Sessions, from recording in the acoustically unique Dome to translating those sessions into an audiovisual environment at Kunsthal. The conversation will open into a Q&A, inviting visitors to share their impressions, curiosities, and questions.

Firas El Hallak

Firas El Hallak is an audiovisual artist and curator whose work operates at the intersection of visual storytelling, spatial practices, and community engagement. Based between Belgium and Beirut, he is the artistic director of Splinter vzw. His multidisciplinary practice spans film, installation, new media, and curating, and has been presented internationally in theatres, festivals, and exhibition contexts, including the Prague Quadrennial, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, and various venues in and beyond Beirut.

Alongside his artistic practice, El Hallak teaches Sound Theory at the Lebanese University. As a curator, he is known for his collaborative and context-responsive approach, working closely with artists across disciplines. His work is grounded in the belief that art can transform spaces and communities, with a particular focus on immersive, site-specific projects that foster dialogue between art, architecture, and the public.

Sara Mondini

Sara Mondini is an art historian specialising in the artistic productions — both ancient and modern, as well as contemporary — of South Asia and the SWANA region (South West Asia and North Africa). She is Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture of West and South Asia in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Ghent University.

Her research engages broadly with visual and material culture, with a particular focus on Indo-Islamic, Indian, and Islamic art and architecture. She is especially interested in questions of patronage, the circulation and transformation of artistic models, and the socio-political dynamics shaping artistic production and reception across time. Her work also explores how built environments are reinterpreted over centuries, and how shared and contested sacred spaces are constructed, negotiated, and understood.

Friday Evenings

During Friday Evenings, we present a programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation for 9 – 10 weeks. We offer local partners a platform. And we highlight artists with whom Kunsthal Gent is currently collaborating. Every Friday night is different: from performance, artist talk and book presentation to conversation, dinner or film screening.
