Opening weekend: Curatorial Studies — As If More Could Save Us

We warmly welcome you to our opening weekend, kicking off on Friday, May 29. As If More Could Save Us is a group exhibition curated by the participants of the 2025 – 26 Curatorial Studies (KASK Ghent) programme. It explores the layered history of Kunsthal Gent.

Entrance: Pay What You Can

The building of Kunsthal Gent, which was once a Carmelite monastery and has been repurposed multiple times, carries centuries of presence within its walls. Objects from the STAM (Ghent City Museum) and Huis van Alijn return to their former location, where they come together with contemporary artworks.

Within the shifting architecture of Kunsthal Gent, this exhibition is centred around accumulation. With works by Danai Anesiadou, Pélagie Gbaguidi, Mélina Ghorafi, Leto Keunen, Susu Laroche, Pàpoo Thibau and Julie Vanlook, 𝘈𝘴 𝘐𝘧 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘜𝘴 unfolds accumulation as something lived, encountered, and continuously shaped through space and time.

In dialogue with these contemporary artworks, this exhibition reintroduces a selection of objects from STAM – Stadsmuseum Gent and Huis van Alijn to Kunsthal Gent. These objects were previously exhibited when the site still served as an archaeological and folklore museum, allowing them to re-enter the building’s layered institutional memory.

Catering

Catering will be provided by Suinner, an interdisciplinary artist and culture worker known for projects concentrating
on representations of our diverse realities — gathering together presentations of emotion and identity rooted experiences.
Status quo challenging, curious, immersive and experimental projects, that have the examination of politics,
histories, responses and responsibilities of bod(y/ies) in relation to their surroundings is what they naturally are drawn to.

The latest involvements of suinner has had to do with installing sound and food, as well as other concentrated or
immersive installation experiences that have to do what we intake and affect.

Accessibility

As If More Could Save Us expands across different exhibition spaces at Kunsthal Ghent, including the Central Space, the Metal Pavilion, the Upstairs Wooden Platform, the Cinema, and the Old House. All of these spaces are wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the Wooden Platform, which can only be reached via stairs. Leto Keunen’s work Fluid Armor and a selection of objects from the collections of STAM and Huis van Alijn are displayed there.

Images of these works and objects are available through a QR code included in the exhibition guide. The printed guide is designed to help visitors navigate the exhibition through texts and floor plans. While Kunsthal Ghent currently does not offer an audio guide for its general exhibitions, our volunteers are happy to provide explanations and assistance upon request.

Curatorial Studies

Curatorial Studies is an intensive one-year postgraduate programme covering key positions, legacies, ideas, and debates important to the curatorial. By drawing on the expertise of a broad network of cultural practitioners and institutions, the course aims to facilitate an environment in which a multiplicity of perspectives and critical discourses can thrive. Established in 1999, the programme is the result of a collaboration between KASK & Conservatorium/School of Arts of HOGENT and Howest, Ghent University, S.M.A.K. – the contemporary art museum in Ghent, and Kunsthal Gent.
