Apparatus 22:
nes•nor•nae

Kunsthal Gent has the pleasure to announce nes•nor•nae, a new format and space-in-space that is devised by Apparatus 22 art collective.

nes•nor•nae will unfold in its own peculiar space in the penumbra of the main entrance of Kunsthal Gent, between the wooden construction of the entrance and the original walls of the church. It and will be a protective shell ~ abstract spell ~ nurturing seed for commissioning artistic interventions exploring utopian feelings and futures.

In-between outside and inside, in-between the ancient skin of the building and the fresh structure of the experimental institution, in-between reality and utopia, nes•nor•nae is thought as a protocol of protocols for conjuring a collective artistic & non-artistic hybridization of intense localities, foreign practices and utopian ideas. In a deep, grassroots, horizontal, caring and slow process.

Commissioned by Kunsthal Gent, nes•nor•nae is part of Apparatus 22 long term series “Blank Auguri '' of names as immaterial artworks defining ~ crystalizing ~ wrapping art initiatives and organisations.

EXCHANGE OFFICE: POSTCARDS FROM SUPRAINFINIT

As an introduction in what the spirit of nes•nor•nae could be, the first intervention is titled EXCHANGE OFFICE: POSTCARDS FROM SUPRAINFINIT and is proposing a gift exchange: a set of 100 of otherworldly leather postcards from Suprainfinit utopian universe prepared by Apparatus 22 are offered to visitors of Kunsthal Gent in exchange of 100 daydreams of utopia and hopeful futures.

Taking place between September 29 – March 29, 2024, the proposal of exchange ~ hybridization ~ transformation in EXCHANGE OFFICE: POSTCARDS FROM SUPRAINFINIT is drawing from several essential features of the practice of Apparatus 22: their long-term interest in proposing and enacting thought-provoking elements (material or immaterial) for gift exchanges with very diverse communities, their genuine interest in forms of collective thinking and their assiduous work in imagining and unfolding since 2015 Suprainfinit- a utopian realm where hope is a critical, corrosive tool.

Apparatus 22 is a transdisciplinary art collective founded in January 2011 by current members Erika Olea, Maria Farcas, Dragos Olea together with Ioana Nemes (1979 - 2011) in Bucharest, Romania. Beginning with 2015 they are working between Bucharest, Brussels and SUPRAINFINIT utopian universe.

They see themselves as a collective of daydreamers, citizens of many realms, researchers, poetic activists and (failed) futurologists interested in exploring the intricate relationships between economy, politics, gender studies and social movements in order to understand contemporary society.

The work of Apparatus 22 was presented in exhibitions at La Biennale di Venezia 2013, MUMOK, Vienna (AT), BOZAR, Brussels (BE), Museion, Bolzano (IT), Kunsthalle Wien (AT), Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles (BE), Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (DE), Contemporary Art Museum (MNAC), Bucharest (RO), La Triennale di Milano (IT), TRAFO Gallery, Budapest (HU), Futura, Prague (CZ), Ujazdowski Castle – CCA, Warsaw (PL), Survival Kit festival, LCCA Riga (LV), Autostrada Bienniale Prizren (XK), CIVA, Bruxelles (BE); performances at MAK,Vienna (AT), Steirischer Herbst, Graz (AT), Kunsthal Gent (BE).
