‘Alien’: a queer reading

In the context of ALIENVillage by Sahjan Kooner, the ongoing exhibition at Kunsthal Gent, we are organising a queer reading of Ridley Scott’s science-fiction classic ‘ALIEN’ (1979) together with vzw La Luna/Sphinx Cinema. From 19:00 to 20:00, you can visit ALIENVillage in the presence of Sahjan Kooner. Then, media scholar Joke D’Heer (who/their) and artist Sahjan Kooner (who/their) will engage in a conversation, based on several fragments from the film.

Talk Sahjan Kooner & Joke D’Heer

For this exhibition, Kooner collaborated with set designer Rob Sollis, who made the props for Prometheus, the fifth film in the ALIEN series. The artist will take us through their exhibition, a future projection of a village in North Punjab.

PLEASE NOTE: This evening is a conversation and queer reading of the film, not a film screening. Due to a restriction on the rights of ALIEN, we can only show fragments from the film.

Alien (1979)

‘ALIEN’ is a 1979 British science fiction/horror film directed by Ridley Scott. The crew of an intergalactic freighter discovers a spaceship on an uninhabited planet sending out an emergency signal. Crew members Kane, Lambert and Dallas board the unknown ship, and Kane finds an unknown organism in the catacombs that immediately attaches itself to his face. Not long after, he gives birth to a terrible monster that systematically hunts down the terrified crew members.

A queer reading

Queer reading is a method of critical cultural research, as a way of going against dominant interpretive schemes. It searches for queerness in texts where the theme is often not explicitly named. After‘The Matrix’ and‘Shrek’ during PinX, Sphinx cinema’s queer film festival, media scholar Joke D’Heer now reinterprets the science fiction classic Alien, in the context of Kunsthal Gent’s new exhibition ALIENvillage by Sahjan Kooner.

dankEconogy1_ALIENvillage is a large scale installation by Sahjan Kooner, around the village of their ancestors in Punjab (northern India). Using the language of science fiction, film and video games, the artist recreates the village as a nomadic commons.

I think about the opportunities for a mutated future where we build something that transcends our own individual lives. In ALIEN I find hope among the horror, a mythology of change, transformation and resistance. The work that is on show is an evolving contaminant asking of the visitor to imagine another model of living, one that includes a contaminated future. Science fiction, especially ALIEN, metabolises on our possibilities, our yearnings for connection between each other and a possibility space of the future.”
