Invitation: Artistic Research Aphasia

Based on new artistic research by Peter Aers, Prof. Dr. Miet De Letter gives a lecture on aphasia, followed by an interactive conversational performance.

What is it about?
Driven by an admiration for communication in all its forms and out of a concern that language is also a tool of power, artist Peter Aers delves into aphasia. Aphasia is an acquired language disorder caused by a brain condition, such as following a stroke. It impairs the understanding and/or expression of spoken and written language.

What can you expect?
After a brief outline of the artistic research by Peter Aers, Prof. Dr. Miet De Letter will give a lecture on aphasia, current scientific insights, and forms of therapy. Afterward, participants will split up based on interest into two conversational performances where listening is valued just as much as speaking: Conversation without Words and Impossible Conversation about Forgotten Words.These two conversational formats are inspired by the work of Building Conversation. This artist collective explores how words and silence help shape our thinking. We will wrap up together with soup.

In addition to the partners involved in this project, we invite anyone who has an affinity with language disorders — whether through personal experience, through loved ones, or simply out of interest. Peter Aers is an artist and was part of Building Conversation for many years. Under the title SETTING CEREMONY, he is exploring, on the one hand, how we can establish an aphasia choir in Ghent, and on the other, how we can create a shared space where community and language in all its expressions can find a place.

Prof. Dr. Miet De Letter is an associate professor at Ghent University (UGent) and lead researcher at BrainComm. She teaches in the Speech-Language and Audiological Sciences program and the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program in Neurorehabilitation. She is also the chair of Parkinson Zorgwijzer Vlaanderen.

Peter Aers

Peter Aers is a performance artist who focuses on the intersection of performance, conversation, and reflection. Until late 2022, he was part of the artistic team of Building Conversation, a platform for dialogical art that explores the relationship between art, dialogue, and society. He has developed several conversational performances and artworks — including Crime and Punishment, The Pain of Others, and A CURSE POEM — in collaboration with many others.

Under the title SETTING CEREMONY, he is exploring, on the one hand, how we can establish an aphasia choir in Ghent, and on the other, how we can create a shared space where community and language in all its expressions can find a place.
