Art Cinema OFFoff: Maximilien Luc Proctor & Two Nice Catholic Boys

During Friday Evenings, we present a 10-week programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation. Art Cinema OFFoff presents analogue short films by Maximilien Luc Proctor, followed by a concert by Two Nice Catholic Boys ft. Kathy Vanhout.

Art Cinema OFFoff brings out the 16mm and Super8 projector for an evening of analogue short films by the French-American filmmaker Maximilien Luc Proctor, including Seasonal Concerns (2024) and the world premiere of Aotearoa (2024). Proctor records oblique impressions with a sharp eye for composition and an intuitive sense of rhythm, gently arguing in favor of the minor and the fleeting. His films have been shown at Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) in New York, Spectacle Theater in Brooklyn, at Light Matter Festival in New York and Crossroads festival in the San Francisco cinematheque.

The screening will be followed by a concert by Two Nice Catholic Boys ft. Antwerp musician Kathy Vanhout (Imaginary Sister). The band of Proctor and Ruairí McCann released a new EP last year on the independent label Bluestack Records. They combine rock and pop with an experimental approach to texture, structure and found sound. Proctor, McCann and Vanhout also represent three different generations of alumni of the Young Critics Workshop at Film Fest Gent.

Art Cinema OFFoff

Art Cinema OFFoff is a platform for experimental cinema and audiovisual art. Time and again, OFFoff searches for films from the past and present that enter into cinematographic and narrative experiments, often navigating between cinema and the other arts. The protagonists of avant-garde cinema are cherished. At the same time, the classical canon is updated and confronted with‘forgotten’ films, new media, contemporary voices and divergent perspectives.

Kunsthal Gent is the permanent venue of OFFoff. OFFoff also shows films at various locations in Flanders and to this end likes to work together with filmmakers, artists, curators and cultural partners from home and abroad. Programme series are regularly framed with lectures, discussions, workshops, educational projects and publications.

Films and audiovisual artworks are shown, studied and discussed as much as possible on their original media carriers. OFFoff investigates what the audiovisual medium can mean today, both in its material manifestation, its reflective power and its emancipatory potential. OFFoff pays special attention to Flemish and Belgian traditions, but also zooms in on international oeuvres or countries with an idiosyncratic film scene.

Film Fest Gent is the largest international film festival in Belgium. The festival propagates film and visual culture to a broad audience and supports film and film music talent. Each year, more than 100,000 people visit the city of Ghent for a challenging programme of films, talks, concerts and much more.

Film Fest Gent highlights filmmakers and the collective experience of cinema. Presenting their films to a diverse audience of professionals and film lovers, the festival offers a platform to upcoming as well as established talent.

During Friday Evenings, we present a programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation for 9 – 10 weeks. We offer local partners a platform. And we highlight artists with whom Kunsthal Gent is currently collaborating. Every Friday night is different: from performance, artist talk and book presentation to conversation, dinner or film screening.
