(Fair) Kin Arts Almanac: On Parenthood

During Friday Evenings, we present a 10-week programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation. On 4.10, inspired by Clara Spilliaert’s new exhibition ‘My Sister Is Pregnant’, we focus on chapter 4 of State Of The Art’s ‘(Fair) Kin Arts Almanac: on parenthood’, introduced by the chapter’s editor, Charlotte Gruber.

Over the past ten years, the difficulties faced by mothers in the art world have been extensively explored from various perspectives. The chapter ‘On Parenthood’ in the Almanac brings together a selection of these sources. The evening will be introduced by the chapter’s editor, Charlotte Gruber.

For the occasion, it will be possible to visit Clara Spilliaert’s exhibition ‘My Sister Is Pregnant’ before the presentation begins (from 19:30 — 20:00)

The (Fair) Kin Arts Almanac

The (Fair) Kin Arts Almanac is made with the voices of more than 130 artists, writers, and activists spinning their thoughts and experiences into 12 chapters around a year. Surprising perspectives, recipes, sound practices, and reflections around ecology, parenthood, the need to rest in a life that never stops, the urgency for space and infrastructure for artists, redistribution of resources, accessibility of the sector, artistic involvement in politics and much more.

Society cannot be devised without the connectivity and relational perspectives of kin.

State Of The Arts (SOTA)

State of the Arts (SOTA) is an open platform to reimagine the conditions that shape the art world today. SOTA operates through the collaborative intelligence of independent artists and artworkers, but is open to all individuals and organisations that want to co-create a more fair and diverse cultural scene in Belgium.

Charlotte Gruber

Charlotte Gruber (PhD) is a researcher, lecturer and art critic specialized in Contemporary Performance and Intermedia Art, with focus on their social and political implications. As a guest professor at Ghent University she developed the international Master’s course ‘Political, Ethical and Social Aspects of the Performance and Media Arts’. She has organised and contributed to a number of international conferences on theater, arts, philosophy and politics. She develops workshops at the intersection of academia and artistic practice as a manner of cognitive activism. She is an editor of both academic volumes and art publications and an active member of the Garden Of Delights collective.

Friday Evenings

During Friday Nights, we present a programme around one or more artists, a collective or organisation for 9 – 10 weeks. We offer local partners a platform. And we highlight artists with whom Kunsthal Gent is currently collaborating. Every Friday night is different: from performance, artist talk and book presentation to conversation, dinner or film screening.
