Casting Call: introducing Meta-Pierke

Join us this Friday Evening for an introduction to Casting Call by Eleni Kamma, with the presentation of Meta-Pierke, a new locally inspired character, and a video developed together with a group of KASK-performance students (under the guidance of artist and educator Hans Bryssinck.)

Eleni Kamma will present the new video in relation to several other collaborative works in Casting Call and we will engage in a roundtable conversation between the artist, the students, the educator, the arts institution, the cinematographer, the intern and the audience. An evening about parrhesia (the courage to speak up), collective agency, collaborative working methods, horizontality and film directing between assuming authority (being the director) and letting go (making space for the participants’ input.)

With Eleni Kamma’s ‘Casting Call’ (2017 — ongoing), Kunsthal Gent is organising a temporary solo exhibition amid the Endless Exhibition for the first time. ‘Casting Call’ is an investigation into the concept of parrhesia: the courage to speak one’s mind. The exhibition takes the form of an installation of characters (drawings, videos, costumes and props) that moves through the Endless Exhibition like a parade, inviting the visitor to participate in a sensory experience.

For the development of Meta-Pierke, a new, locally inspired character for Casting Call, Eleni joined forces with the first-year performance students from KASK School of Arts, under the guidance of the artist and pedagogue Hans Bryssinck. The students were invited to develop their own performative interventions in the public space, taking the concept of parrhesia and the character of Meta-Pierke as a starting point. They chose the Kalandeberg, a square in the city centre of Ghent that is an intersection of seven streets.

Friday Evenings

Every Friday evening for 9 weeks, Kunsthal Gent will host a program centered around one or more artists, a collective or organization. From an artist talk, debate or book presentation to a performance, documentary or film evening.

The events are partly related to Kunsthal Gent’s artistic program and have grown out of the courses of artists with whom we currently collaborate, such as the evenings with Eleni Kamma (in collaboration with Hans Bryssinck and KASK Performance students) and Dieter Durinck. However, much of Vrijdagavonden’s programme comes about in collaboration with local partners. For this series we collaborated with, among others, Lochness, School of Love, Martina Petrović & Robert Monchen (In de Ruimte) Filip Van Dingenen and Hélène Meyer (Piloot).

And we highlight artists with whom Kunsthal Gent is currently collaborating. Every Friday night is different: from performance, artist talk and book presentation to conversation, dinner or film screening.
