In April 2024, Kunsthal Gent welcomed curator and organizer Helmut Batista, founder of the residency programme CAPACETE in Rio de Janeiro, for a mini-residency and a series of studio visits, as part of the relaunch of CAPACETE’s internationally renowned residency programme, active since 1998. Building on this collaboration, Kunsthal Gent now invites artist David Bergé for a residency at CAPACETE in Rio de Janeiro, from 24 July to 23 September 2025.

During his stay at Capacete, David Bergé will work alongside a group of Brazilian and international artists, each engaged in their own practice. His residency marks a new chapter in his ongoing research into how everyday objects, environments, and encounters can be transformed into time- and book-based forms that often invite participation.

In 2026, David Bergé will return to Kunsthal Gent to host a workshop on his specific approach to publishing and distribution of artist books. Also, Capacete’s new curator Rubens Takamine will come to Kunsthal Gent in the spring.

David Bergé

David Bergé (Brussels/Athens) is an artist whose work transforms everyday life and objects into time- and book-based forms that are often participatory. Since 2008, he has been developing his Walk Pieces: carefully composed, hundred-minute urban walks in silence, during which participants attune themselves to the physical, social, and climatic conditions of the city.

His more recent projects focus on material writing and situated publishing, such as Bialetti: A Catalogue (Spector Books, 2023) and Me, Le Corbusier, and a friend (Time Based Editions, 2025). Bergé is the founder of PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPANDED PUBLISHING ATHENS, which produces the imprints kyklàda.press and Time Based Editions, and collaborates with publishers such as Spector Books and Jap Sam Books. His practice grows out of extended research processes, collaborations, and encounters, exploring themes such as urban histories, human geographies, desire, affect, and pain.

Bergé has been invited to residencies worldwide, including Pivô (São Paulo), The Cape Cod Modern House Trust (USA), Beta-Local (San Juan, Puerto Rico), geoAIR (Tbilisi), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), and the Saari Residence of the Kone Foundation (Finland)

Capacete

CAPACETE is an independent residency and art agency founded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1998 by the artist Helmut Batista. Its activities reflect its long-term interdisciplinary initiatives as a mobile and independent art space. CAPACETE facilitates the research, contacts and documenting of aesthetical, cultural, social and political processes in Brazil and in other South American countries, establishing also dialogues with international contexts outside the continent. The political, historic, urban, environmental and social contexts of South American cities provide vital laboratories in which to probe and create within the continent’s complexities.

Since the pandemic, CAPACETE has collaborated closely with nearby initiatives such as xow.rumi, tropigalpão, and Ponto G, creating a vibrant urban ecosystem of residencies, exhibitions, and encounters.

Its new residency programme combines a one-year trajectory for local participants with a three-month residency for international artists. Both strands intertwine through seminars, workshops, and public presentations, making the programme a living laboratory for art, politics, and social processes.
